Biggest Interior Design Trends for 2022

Let us start off by saying this — in no way would we ever advise a client to re-decorate their entire home to match the trends of the year. Your home should be a reflection of your own personal style and the things that you love. But every once in a while, an idea will come along that gets introduced as a “trend”, and ends up sticking around for a very long time. Plus, not only do we like to help you stay ahead of the curve when it comes to all things interiors… it’s also really fun to see which ones stick around from year to year.

If you are thinking about giving your home a little refresh this year to make it more current, consider implementing any of these ideas that best fit in with your aesthetic.

Here are the biggest interior design trends that we expect to see a lot more of in 2022…

Murals & Wallpaper

We’re officially deeming 2022 the year of the scenic mural revival (everywhere we look someone is putting up a mural - especially one that mimics nature). We will also see a lot of floral and botanical wallpaper patterns, as well as more textural wallpapers, such as grass cloth.

Bold Marble

Keep an eye out for light marble with heavy, dark veining on everything from countertops and backsplashes, to fireplace surrounds and showers. Our favourite? Calacatta Viola Marble. It is a warm, cream coloured stone with deep, burgundy veining and it looks beautiful just about anywhere.

Historically-Inspired

We expect to see a lot more ceiling medallions and other ornamental details, stemming from what the kids are calling “Royalcore” or “Regencycore” (blame it on Bridgerton). We’ll also see the continued use of gilded mirrors, vintage art, fancy millwork and mid-tone paint colours.

Dark & Moody

Let’s face it - the past two years have been rough on everybody. Our spaces are a reflection of our collective mood, which right now is… well, moody and at times a little dark.

Traditional Styles

This year we can expect to see more classic, timeless details in everything from lighting to architecture. Keep an eye out for penny tile, wingback chairs, dark woods, and shades on light fixtures. With supply chain delays and a collective desire for more sustainability in design, people are also shopping for vintage pieces and repurposing secondhand furniture.

Eclecticism

We don’t mean eclecticism just in terms of the eclectic design style. Someone who identifies with a modern organic style, for example, can still apply principles of eclecticism by mixing: styles, materials, eras, and textures. We’ll also see a lot more whimsical patterns and bold colours being used to infuse more personality into our homes.

Trends that will continue from 2021

Checkerboard Floors

Last year, checkerboard floors were hands down the hottest trend (both indoors and outdoors), and one that we’ll continue to see more of in 2022. While a black and white tile pattern boasts a classic, retro vibe, many designers are putting their own spin on this trend—opting to use muted, neutral colours, or bold, contrasting colours—and even swapping tile out for other materials like marble or wood.

Curves

Curved corners, curved walls, curved furniture. Softer lines were everywhere in 2021. We expect to see this continue into this year.

Outdoors In, Indoors Out

With many of us still spending a significant amount of time in our homes, the trend toward nature-inspired interiors (also known as biophilic design) and elevated outdoor spaces continues. Inside the home we’ll continue to see greenery used in styling, floor to ceiling windows, and natural materials like stone, marble, wood, and linen. Backyards will continue to be an extension of our living rooms—with comfortable, stylish outdoor furniture, and spaces dedicated to entertaining and lounging.

Useful Spaces

For the last two years, many of the spaces in our homes have become multi-purpose (think: home office/home gym). This year, we will look for more ways to make use of all of the rooms in our homes and turn spare bedrooms into spaces that function for you and the way you live everyday (also known as leisure rooms).

So go ahead, turn that guest bedroom that gets used once a year into a game room, a library room, a secret bar - something that you and your whole family can enjoy.

Relaxing Spaces

More than ever, our homes are our sanctuaries. Last year, a majority of people were looking to create calm, comfortable, inviting homes that felt like a warm hug. Our affinity for warm colours, soft lighting, comfy furniture and cozy textiles will continue into 2022.

Textured Materials

This year, we’ll continue to bring dimension to our homes with textured materials that feel good to the touch and are interesting to look at. Think fluted, reeded, scalloped, ribbed, bouclé, and fringe.
